Cache 3
Or, should I say 3, 4, 5.
Looking at the satellite map of the next 2 caches north of our previous find, it seems it may be possible to drive right to them or quite close.
Snack Break - Bibbulmun Track
Sliced Onion - Bibbulmun Track
However that was not the case. Now looking more closely at the sat map on GC, the lines drawn as tracks or roads are a complete fiction.
They just don't exist anymore in reality.
We approached GZ for both these caches as best we could with our vehicle but we were thwarted over and over by tracks that lead nowhere or were blocked by fallen trees and even locked gates.
The closest we could get was about 600m and decided that the return walk through pretty rough bush was not worth the effort and we gave up on them.
Instead we headed for
White Horse Hills Hut GC1C3QP
In hindsight it appears that this area is not meant to be access by civilian vehicles, hence the locked gates, but at the time we just thought we were just on the wrong access road.
To get to this one, according to our mud map, we needed to take an easterly track off the powerline track. However the track in was through a deep muddy pond and surrounded by sticky swamp, grrr….
After a couple of tries we managed to get round that obstacle onto a very rough track which lead us to a nice gravel road. This took us to the hut where we were pleased to make a quick find and set off again.
The day was starting to get late so we decided to give the rest of the Bib track caches a miss.
Our deceptive mud map showed we could just head in a generally eastern direction and we would eventually pop out on the Albany Hwy.
Not so easy.
From the hut there was a vague track meandering through the bush which took us sort of in the direction we needed to go. After what seemed an eternity we came to another gravel road which looked promising. There was a slight problem however, there was a hand painted sign at a cross roads which stated 'Private property'. The sign did not indicate in which direction the so called private area was. We continued east hoping to find a way to the Hwy and came upon a pine forest with quite good roads. None of these roads seemed to take us in the direction we needed to go and we spent a long time driving around in a big loop ending up where we started. The day was getting even later and we were not keen on spending the night stuck in a pine forest.
We had to back track a long way to get around a creek but eventually made it to roads which sort of took us where we needed to go. At long last we could see the Hwy and thought we were home and hosed. Not so!
We came to a locked gate...…...not happy, there was the Hwy just 10m away and no way to it. We carried on looking for a way out but just found another locked gate, how many gates would we have to pass by?
We followed a fire break along the edge of the forest and Hwy and eventually spotted a path towards the road where the fence had been knocked down. At last...Freedom.
It was such a relief to be back on the black top.
