Holland Track Adventure, Nov 2018, Day 2

Sunday 4 Nov 2018

In the evening, last night, before going to bed we saw a small kangaroo like marsupial hopping around near our campsite. I believe it was a bilby.

This morning we woke refreshed and ready to continue on our journey.
After we had packed up camp we went for a walk to find the nearby cache.

Gnaala Mia                                        GC6VGXW

Was a quick find once we had the correct spot, ha ha, isn't that always the case.
Mistraluna had found this one previously so it was only me to sign the log

Our next cache was not far away at Congelin Dam, there was some interesting railway history here as well as the dam.

WST - Congelin Dam                        GC7908P

We made our way to GZ and had a thorough search but came up empty. There was a likely spot with a hollow log lying on the ground but having a feel down the log with a stick revealed nothing. There was no clue to what the hint was referring to.
After a wander around and reading the interpretative sign we jumped back in the car to our next cache.
Heading east again we came to

Fire Lookout - Dryandra                     GC1ACQM

This was another cache which Mistraluna had already found but was happy for me to grab while we were going past.
There was a good view from here out over the surrounding countryside.
The cache was an easy find and we grabbed a TB to take on our journey.

An interesting route to our next cache took us through the dryandra forest along well maintained roads, numbats scurried across the road in front of us and we came across a group of Europeans on tour to photograph wildlife with enormous lenses.

WST - Kawana walk                        GC7908Z

After our 4wd bush bash we came out near a camping area and cabins, we drove through the campsite to a parking area and parked in the shade of a tree and went off for a walk on a trail here to find the cache
The uphill walk was a bit arduous for me due to my dodgy ticker but we got there in the end, at least the return journey was downhill, ha ha.

icky No9                                          GC3REQ4

We took a side track of the main road and headed for GZ, there were many twists and turns on a fairly rough and sometimes washed out track with vegetation scraping down the sides of the hilux but we soon got close enough to jump out and head cross country for a few hundred metres to find the cache. Signed the log and headed back to the car to cool down in the aircon as the day was starting to heat up even early in the morning.

Our next cache was good drive away as we continued East and a little bit South on our way towards Narrogin
We stopped along the way to find

 Doctor over here                               GC7RW3A

In the driveway of one of the local farmers was a Tardis. What a surprise to see that. On closer inspection we found that it was equipped with lots of Dr Who pictures, electronic gadgets, lights and speakers which played various Dr Who related audio. Very impressive construction, and out in the middle of nowhere. If not for geocaching we would have driven past this and not even seen it. We took some time playing with all the gadgets, listening to the audio and taking pictures before heading off once again to our next cache on the list

On arrival in Narrogin we headed to the Foxes Lair nature reserve. We were able to drive around to most of the caches in the reserve despite it being intended that you walk, ha ha
Our first cache here was

Foxydug granite                              GC5XVTZ

We drove right up to area of GZ and had a quick find before moving on to the next.

Granite Walk                                    GC38HTX

We parked at the carpark and made a short walk to GZ
At GZ we had another quick find and sign of the log and returned to the car to make our way to the next cache

Foxydug claypit                                 GC5XVVF

With this one we parked at the claypit, which looks like it has been set up as some sort of watery nature playground. The cache was a short walk away and was soon found and log signed. The cache container was an interesting one.

Foxydug breakaway                          GC72VFK

Parking at the picnic area it was another short walk to the cache and a quick find and log.
After we got back to the car we took the opportunity to have a bit to eat for lunch, the flies seemed to enjoy joining us for our lunch as well, ha ha.

Foxydug Archibald                                   GC76KEK

A bit of a drive around the block was required to get to our next cache in this abandoned jet boat course. There was a watercourse to cross over but I was not going to risk getting bogged so I parked nearby and made a short walk to find GZ. The cache was a clever hide and gets a favourite point from me.

Welcome to Narrogin                     GC77TH4

A quick park and grab here, cache was quickly found and log signed

We had a drive back in to town to have a quick look for a multi in the local park, I did not want to spend too much time on this one as it had a string of DNFs.
We searched all the likely spots but I called it after about 15 mins as I did not think there was much chance of finding this one today.
Time was slipping away and we needed to get back on the road to our final destination

Our next destination saw us heading east on Yilliminning Road stopping along the way to check out another rock formation

Yilliminning rock                                    GCGWBX

I enjoyed stopping here to inspect the rock formation and the views from the top were spectacular in all directions.
A quick find and log of the cache then a bit of a look around before heading off again

Nearly There

Phew! Made it :)

Heading east and now a little north we made a detour to find another rock which the cache had favourite points

birdwhistle                                          GC15KGJ

Where we parked our vehicle was a sign stating that this had been a trig point used by early explorers
in 1892 by Oxley
After climbing to the top of the rock I could not find any evidence of a trig structure or any other marker apart from the usual tourist rock cairn. There is also no listing on GCA for a trig here.
The cache was found after a bit of a bush bash then the log signed before heading off to our next cache on the list

WST - Taarblin Lake                                GC79086

Heading east again and a bit south we came to this heart wrenching scene
I have to say I was deeply disturbed at how human impact had created this salt lake and caused such profound devastation
Only the pictures can describe the how the environment has been so badly damaged
Cache was a quick find once we had crunched the numbers from the sign

WST - Toolibin Lake                                 GC7908C

The day was beginning to get away from us, and we still had many kilometres to go. We were meeting up with the other travellers in Hyden, who were joining us on the Holland Track.
Fortunately, this cache was along the way, but time was against us, so we stopped to gather the required information, but decided to leave the actual find for another day when we wouldn't be so pressed for time.

WST - Kulin Water slide                           GC7907P

It was a bit of a drive to our next stop in Kulin, we stopped here and had a quick look at the free camping area in town where I had an overnight stop on my way back from Alice Springs last year and also the council caravan park which was a very nice set up if you wanted to pay a self nominated fee
The cache was at the local water park, which I had missed on my previous visit
A nice easy park and grab then back on the road continuing east towards Hyden

Tin Horse Highway - Kulin                       GC1GZ2Y

AVENGED DNF :)
We stopped at GZ to find that the large log I remember seeing on my previous visit was recently removed
I was resigned for another DNF when I spotted a Sistema box under the fencing wire near where the log had been
The cache was quite exposed so after signing the log we placed it back with some bark covering it to make it a bit less conspicuous

This is where the cache used to be Ha Ha.

DD3-1 - Wind, Rail,Hail (Storm Stoppers) GC26V7K

This was a quick park and grab, our last for the day before arriving at our final destination for the day at the Hyden Wave Rock caravan park where we set up camp

When we arrived in Hyden we went to Wave Rock caravan park and checked out the camping sites and paying for a spot. There was no problem getting a site as we would be the only campers in the corner we had chosen.
It was getting late in the evening and I fancied having a nice pub meal so we headed into town to the pub. I chose a T bone steak from the cabinet and Mistraluna chose some lamb chops then I went and cooked them on the large BBQ grill inside the dining area.
After a huge meal we needed to go for a walk to help the food go down and wandered around the little town checking out the sights before heading back to the caravan park to set up camp for the night and enjoy a nice hot shower
Another huge day of travelling and caching
Tomorrow would be the start of another new adventure as we were to meet up with the rest of the party to tackle the northern section of the Holland Track.
